Kelvin Hernandez, a senior on the UNC Greensboro men’s golf team representing Puerto Rico, won the 2026 Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships, also known as the Hoerman Cup, on Thursday, August 7, at Royal Blue Golf Course in Nassau, Bahamas. Hernandez carded rounds of 71-68-69 for a 54-hole total of 208, eight strokes under par, finishing five shots clear of the field.
Christopher Richards Jr. of Trinidad and Tobago finished as runner-up with a three-under-par total of 213. In the team competition, Puerto Rico claimed the title outright with a 54-hole score of 858, six strokes under par, built on rounds of 292, 281, and 285.
A native of Caguas, Puerto Rico, Hernandez posted 14 birdies and 35 even-par holes across the three rounds. “The greatest victories are never achieved alone,” Hernandez said afterward, crediting his teammates’ support throughout the week.
The win doubled as a springboard for Hernandez’s college season: the result secured an automatic bid to the 2026 NCAA Regionals, the 10th regional appearance for UNC Greensboro’s program in its Division I era. Caribbean Golfer will continue tracking Hernandez and the region’s other top amateurs as the college season progresses.
